Great marketing books for the small business owner - Part II

Here's a brief review of the second book which ought to be on your Christmas list...

The Internet and social meda have transformed the way companies communicate with consumers.  The New Rules of Marketing and PR shows you how to leverage the potential of Web-based communication to build a personal link with your market.  Forget old advertising tactics that don't work online.  Adopt the new rules and start a profitable relationship with your buyers and those who influence them.

Written by David Meerman Scott in 2007 and totally updated in 2009 with new sections on social media, "The New Rules of Marketing and PR - how to use news releases, blogs, podcasting, viral marketing and online media to reach buyers directly", is a must-read for professional marketers and business owners alike.

Great marketing books for the small business owner - Part I

As it's coming up to Christmas, I want to feature a couple of books I've read which should be on your Christmas present wishlist because they're full of great reading matter for the small business owner.

The first "Advertise, Promote, and Market your Business or Web Site with little or no money", written by Bruce C Brown (2006) is packed full of do's and don'ts of internet marketing.  Updated in 2006, it's still very relevant and is wonderfully easy to read.  Written for the small business owner who doesn't have an IT or Web Design department, and is limited on technology budget and knowledge, this book is an excellent starting point for startups, new Internet entrants, or businesses looking to better their current efforts (latter quote from Jai Merchant, Senior Business Consultant, Internet Marketing Logic, Inc.

Benefits of W3C compliance

The Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) developed accessibility standards for all websites under the name Web Accessibility Initiative or WAI, so that every user can make use of the information presented regardless of physical attributes, viewing device or browser.

So, why conform?

  • increased revenue - at least 10% of the population in most countries has disabilities.  Which company website wouldn't benefit from another 10% of customers through their door?

  • enhanced online presence - a professional, easily accessible website will do wonders for your company's reputation and your brand

  • improved search rankings - not many search engine users look beyond the first page of search results, and compliance will help get your website on that first page!

  • faster navigation and download times for improved customer experience

So, what does this mean for the average website?

This PDF is a summary of the latest accessibility guidelines and basic compliance methods:  Summary of latest WAI guidelines 2008.  Hope you find it useful.

10 tips for Email Marketing

Email marketing is one of the most powerful and effective forms of online marketing today.  It’s cheap, easy to do, builds a personal relationship with your customers and allows immediate distribution of information.  Use it as a tool to let your customers know about new products and services, relevant industry information and special offers.  Most importantly, look at your results and use that information to improve future promotional campaigns.

Here is a checklist of 10 tips for e-marketing to help you build successful campaigns:

  1. Only mail to opt-in lists, and keep data secure. Make sure you always use lists of recipients who have ‘opted-in’ or subscribed to your mailing list.  You’ll always get a better response from recipients who want to read what you send and they’ll trust you more.  What’s more, the Data Protection Act makes this a legal requirement of all direct selling.  Legally too, you must keep data secure by making sure you and you alone have access to your lists.  Don’t sell or lend your data – it’s a sure way of losing contacts and damaging your reputation.

  2. Keep content relevant and interesting. You need to make sure you have great, compelling content that’s right for your audience.  Content must be relevant and interesting.  This takes time, but will ensure you build a better relationship with your contacts, and you can always use results from previous campaigns to help you determine what your readers find interesting (check click-throughs on keywords, open and bounce rates)

  3. Build continuity into your template layout. Always link your template layout to your website or other promotional items so that your recipients recognise your emails.  Your clients will be familiar with your website so send emails that are consistent in appearance and extend its appeal.

  4. How often should you send emails? This is tricky because you’ve worked hard to obtain your customers’ details, so bombarding them with emails could trigger them to unsubscribe.  However you do need to keep in touch often enough or you’ll see response rates drop.  Use a survey or poll to find out how your customers feel about your emails and make sure you include a question about frequency.

  5. Incentivise and motivate your customers. Best practice e-marketing gives recipients a reason to read and interact with your emails.  Offer interesting information of benefit to your readers – don’t hard sell in every communication you send.  Think about including competitions or freebies every so often to keep your customers interested.

  6. Make sure your subject line is relevant. Often overlooked, the subject line of an email is vitally important and must interest your recipients enough to open your email, rather than the hundreds of other emails demanding attention in their Inbox.  Test different subject lines for the same email by segmenting your lists, and checking your open rates for each.

  7. Use reputable email marketing software. There are many e-marketing software companies, and some offer a free service for small businesses typically sending less than 500 emails per month.  Shop around and make sure the company you choose can help you with our first tip ie keeping data secure and always emailing to opt-in lists only.

  8. Attach a plain text version for those who can’t receive HTML emails.  These days, most email clients can accept HTML, but for those who can’t, offer the option of a plain text email to ensure they can read what you have to tell them.

  9. Get viral with your campaigns by encouraging your readers to forward your emails to a friend.  This costs nothing, takes two seconds and can more than double your readership.  Most email marketing software offers a “forward to a friend” widget which you can add to your template quickly and easily.

  10. Finally, check, test and check again! It sounds simple, but we’ve seen many beautifully designed emails with typos and grammatical errors.  This does nothing for your reputation as a small business!  Check your spelling and make sure your email makes sense.  Finally send a copy to your own Inbox and see how it appears in the Preview pane.  If you have mainly images at the top of your email, you’ll see that these don’t automatically appear.  If you can’t avoid the use of images such as your logo at the top of the email, make it smaller, and use descriptive text which your readers will recognise.

Would you buy from this website?

I recently read an article which insisted that the economic downturn is almost over, and therefore the most important issue for small business owners was to ensure their online shopping carts were ready to process the enormous amount of traffic which will signify the end of the credit crunch.  Oh, if only it were that simple!!  I love the thought that a wavehuge wave of online sales will effectively break overnight at some given point in the future, and all I need worry about is whether my site server can handle the volume of sales!  Unfortunately, my 30 years' experience in small business marketing tells me it just won't happen like that.

Nevertheless, the point about reviewing your online shopping cart is a good one, particularly in light of the fact that the current economic climate is producing more savvy online browsers rather than shoppers, who take much longer and do more research before making a buying decision, if at all.

With this in mind, I've been asked to conduct some research on small business e-commerce sites.  So, would you buy from this website? I look forward to your comments.

Thank you.

Experian are selling my business data!

Today I was amazed to discover that Experian are selling my business data without authorisation, and it seems they've been doing this for years.  The company who coldcalled me today have been using Experian's business lists to build up their customer database and as of Sept 2007 were ranked 12th largest web site design company in the UK - all thanks to Experian's underhand marketing strategy.  Want proof that Experian are using data for commercial reward?  See for yourself

According to the law, there are eight principles put in place by the Data Protection Act 1998 which specify that data must be:

  • fairly and lawfully processed

  • processed for limited purposes

  • adequate, relevant and not excessive

  • accurate

  • not kept for longer than is necessary

  • processed in line with your rights

  • secure

  • not transferred to countries outside the EU without adequate protection.

It is against the law if a data controller, for example an employer, does not keep to these principles.

Frankly, I don't believe my business data has been processed in line with my rights, nor is it being processed for limited purposes (being commercially marketed over a period of years), nor have I ever been informed by Experian that they would use my data in this way.  I have raised the issue with Experian, and am expecting a response shortly.

Naturally, I'll keep you posted.

Trying times call for measurable online marketing tactics

Most companies have cut their marketing budgets by around 20% in these trying times, and those in small business are really suffering.  Don't panic though - there's still plenty you can do with a reduced marketing spend.

  • Look at social media technology - research it, use it, and MEASURE it

  • Use email marketing efficiently - MEASURE and split-test as much as possible

Above all, get smart - MEASURE everything you do, focus on what works and cut out the rest!  Get more value from your marketing by following this simple principle.

By concentrating on measurable online marketing campaigns, you can cut your costs and still see what's driving your sales.

25 people needed for special online marketing training

Today, I wanted to let you in on something a friend of mine, Ryan Deiss is doing for 25 *VERY LUCKY* people.
Ryan has an amazing training program that's being re-opened today at 3:00pm EST:

https://touchstone.infusionsoft.com/go/slet/smmtips

This part is really cool...

It's 100% for people who have not been making money on the internet.  In fact, it's one of the main qualifications you must have.  He's looking for 25 people who haven't made a single dime online to partner with him on a unique project.

Rather than go into all the details here, he has created a special information page at:

https://touchstone.infusionsoft.com/go/slet/smmtips

...that will go live this Thursday at 3:00pm EST.

This obviously isn't for everyone. (In fact, if you're already a successful or even semi-successful online marketer, he doesn't want you to join!) With that said, the 25 available spots will get taken very quickly, so I ask that you consider the opportunity between now and Thursday at 3:00pm EST and decide if it's right for you.

P.S. If you've been following Ryan at all you may recall he held the same training back in 2008. That program sold out in under 6 minutes, and I have no reason to believe this one won't do the same. Check it out:

Social Media Marketing explained

Social Media Marketing (SMM) is one of the most powerful marketing techniques around on the web.   It is growing at a phenomenal rate, and the most popular examples are Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.  Those in the know are beginning to find ways to use SMM to promote their companies and products, and are gaining access to millions of web users worldwide who log in daily to check their Facebook accounts.  Twitter make it even easier with a facility where you can log in and 'tweet' wherever you are by mobile phone - just imagine the amount of traffic Twitter generates!

In brief, social media sites are a way for users to get in touch, share information and stay in touch with friends, colleagues etc via the web using text, email, photos, videos etc  In each case, each user creates an account or profile on the social media site which often lists hobbies, jobs, likes, dislikes etc.  You can then create your own account and use the in-built search facility to look for like-minded people, graduates from your high school, etc and then get in contact.

Now, think about how you might be able to use this concept to promote your company... if you're able to search geographically for people with defined likes and dislikes, you can then build a list of those who might be interested in your product.  BEWARE though, there are rules which you must abide by if you want to succeed in this field, and NO DIRECT SELLING is one of them!

So how do you use SMM in your marketing strategy?  I'll be bringing you a free guide to how to monetize SMM very shortly.  This guide has been written by an expert in the field who's spent years researching his craft.  His methods are foolproof and simple to follow, so watch this space......

Lucky Few are Buying $1 Million Homes in USA for Just 2%

[caption id="attachment_57" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Welcome to your new home!"]Welcome to your new home![/caption]

There's a new "secret" that a lucky few have already found that's enabling them to literally buy houses that ordinarily sell for around $1 Million or more in USA - but now for just $1,997 or LESS!

There are 3,141 counties in the United States, and each one possesses this exciting new opportunity whereby anyone with as little as $100 to seldom more than $5,000 can buy homes ordinarily valued from $30,000 to in quite a number of cases above $5 million! - and for just 1% to rarely above 5% their selling costs!

And the BEST part about this is that you can be located anywhere and still buy any home you want - even if you're 3,000 miles away or more!

But, you don't have to visit the county you buy the homes in - instead, you can do it all from the comfort and privacy of your home using just your tiny 'ole mouse!

This is what makes this such a wonderful opportunity, in that you can go online to some select websites, then pick and choose the properties you want, and then get them for between 1%-5% at most.

No matter what happens you make money!

You basically buy a homeowner's tax lien certificate because he or she wasn't able to pay their property taxes.

They by law must pay you anywhere from 16% to as much as 50% in interest - and in many cases they must pay you back within as little as 6 months.

But, if they can't pay you back, YOU own their home free and clear (and for what usually amounts to just 1% of the house's actually selling value!)

Now, at this point you can either keep the house for yourself, or you can swiftly turn around and resell it (in any economy, good or bad!) to banks, lenders or individual buyers answering your little classified ad! - and where you make a killing!

The site that has all the facts as to how you can do this from your laptop or PC is here:

http://www.PickAndClickCash.com/prima7

But I wish to strongly encourage you to take action and go there as it's rumoured that they are going to withdraw this exciting opportunity as soon as they reach the maximum number of "members" they can handle.

What makes a great website?

There are literally millions of websites on the internet today (CNN counted 100 million back in November 2006), many of which are good, but  occasionally I come across one which really ''grabs' my attention.

So, what is it that makes a great website?  Why am I 'grabbed' by some and not others?

This one really got me..... www.jasonmraz.com and here's my reasons why....

  1. simple, eye-catching, unique design

  2. choice of voice, music or silence whilst browsing

  3. visual gadgets like music notes popping up over the "check it out" link

  4. use of video which brings the site to life

  5. up-to-date content written in 'friendly' tone

  6. simple navigation

Design, content and navigation are key elements in any site, and your web designer or SEO expert can help you check whether these elements in your site are creating the kind of response you need for your business.  Search engines love the use of video, and your search results will be higher if you have video(s) uploaded to your site.  But how do you test the overall effect of your site on a viewer, and does the look of your site influence the kind of customer you may or may not get?

Why not use a poll or survey?  These are easily created with standard email marketing software, and emailing your current customers to ask them what they like/don't like about your site will give you valid feedback.   Sometimes, all it takes is a simple 'tweak' to your site design, content or navigation for you to get many more customers.

What do you think?  Give me your views on this site, or ones you really like....

Keeping up to date with website marketing strategies

Most small business owners know they need a website, but promoting your website and keeping up to date with all the latest marketing techniques online is a full time job in itself.  If you're lucky enough to have an SEO expert, then you're half the way there - but there's still lots you can do to increase your Google search rankings so customers can find you.

  • list your website and company details with the many free directories available online

  • build up email lists and send out regular news updates to your customers, with a link to your website

  • build links with reputable information-based organisations

  • upload press releases to your site

  • change the content of your site regularly (having a news section is a great way to do this)

This is just a few of the strategies available, but to be really successful online, you need to keep at it, and use all the available technologies to drive customers to your site, and create/maintain online exposure.

So how do you keep up to date with the latest techniques on the web?  You can always subscribe to online marketing magazines and search their sites for information, and set up accounts with social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn etc.

My preference, in conjunction with the above, is to search for local training in your area.  www.direct.gov.uk/careersadvice is a great place to start, and if you can't find a course to suit, email an adviser and you'll get a response within 24hrs.  Usually courses available for professionals in business are tailored to your busy working day, so often there'll be half day or evening sessions in your neighbourhood.  Not only do you gain knowledge, but you'll also be networking and gaining contacts (don't forget to ask if they want receive email newsletters from you - if they agree, add them to your email contact list).

Go on - get out there and get informed!
